October baby

So the month really got by me...for a supposedly "slow" month, we sure seemed to be busy.  I think I'm the one in low gear while everyone else is cruising along at normal speed.

So, not only have I not blogged much, I totally missed Laney's birthday post!  She turned the big 9 on the 18th and is certainly growing up way too fast!  She enjoyed playing softball this summer and is currently loving taking piano for the second year.  She does a wonderful job and we enjoy listening to her when she actually sits down to practice.  We're still working on that.

She loves to draw and to cook.  I am working up to the idea of having the kids plan and cook some meals during the week...something I think she will thoroughly enjoy.  So, here's a belated, "Happy birthday!" to our little "Nee, Nee" as AJ used to call her when they were little.

Lessons from the tub

My friend & I were recently talking about teaching little ones to drink from the cup and she shared the information that giving them a cup in the tub was a great way to teach them how to do it.  She said, "For some reason, they all love to drink their own butt water, so why not use it?"  Laughing yet somewhat disgusted, I agreed that there is something that they really do love about drinking bathwater.  They won't drink tap water if it's at all warm, but bathwater?  We also laughed at the thought of them in the tub together and imagining them looking at each other and saying, "Wow!  This bath water tastes wonderful!!  Did you pee in here yet, 'cuz this is awesome!"  Mmmm...Drink up baby!

It's the "tooth"...

...the whole "tooth" & nothin' but the "tooth".

Noah now has teeth, as you can plainly see,
not just one or two, but two plus three!
There's another on the way,
but it's putting up a fight,
which makes it hard to get any sleep,
especially at night.
He's using them for biting,
and making Mommy scream.
He'd use them for food,
but he only likes ice cream.
But most of all he uses them
to flash us a great smile,
and that makes all the "OW!'s"
well worth the while.

Busted!

The kids like to eat "snacks" like a spoonful of peanut butter or Nutella.  The other day Laney had a spoonful sitting on the counter while she did something.  When she came back it was gone...well, the spoon was still there...and so was Ian.

Laney (laughing):  "Ian, did you eat my chocolate?"
Ian (innocently):  "Nope!"

You be the judge...

For future reference

When the babysitter brings cornstarch and offers to make what I call slime, it might sound like a fun thing for her and the kids to do, but it's not exactly the best idea I've agreed to all week.  Let's just say that I'll be washing a few more dishes and areas of the kitchen that I hadn't planned on cleaning today.

Reality speaks at the doctor's office

So I've been in denial about my baby's melon & the comments such as, "He's got a big head!" or "His forehead is big."  As a mother, we often tend to see only the beauty in the gift of their presence and not their physical traits that appear so easily to others.  So at his 9 month checkup, Noah's height and weight were taken as well as his head circumference.  The first two measurements were within the range of 25-30% which means that he's a little small for his age...at least for those two.  Head, not so much.   That's at 99%.  So, actually he's got a "normal" size head for his age, it's the rest of his body that just needs to catch up.  That would be good if it happened soon because he's really good at landing on his head when he falls.

Can't help but think about the movie, "So I married an axe murderer"...The accent really tops it off.  Jason's brother, Seth, can imitate it perfectly & we have laughed quite often over this movie and the size of his godson's "heed".

Sixth sense

I think our children (and maybe several other family's children) have a "gift" of a sixth sense.  Especially our boys...they seem to be very in tune to this sense.  No, I'm not talking about seeing dead people or things of the supernatural world.  I'm talking about being able to sense any time they can deprive me of any need that I have.

From their very start, I think they all can sense when you are about to enjoy a warm meal, or anything in general that involves using both hands.  They can be content for any amount of time & then are suddenly hungry or in need of cuddling, diaper changes, potty breaks, etc, when you are about to get any type of sustanence into your already low blood sugared body.

Then there's the sleeping thing.  I swear that any time I get all of my stuff done and finally get a chance to sit down and relax or shut my eyes, everyone decides they need something.  Not to mention during bedtime or getting in a power nap!  It usually takes me a little bit to wind down & fall asleep, but no matter if I snooze immediately or if it takes 30 minutes, just as I start to doze into happy dream mode, I am awakened by someone.  So, needless to say, it takes time to settle them back in & then another 30 minutes to settle myself down again to fall asleep.  Lately this has gone on several times a night with several of them ganging up on me & most always it's the boys.

Jason is unfortunately one of those who has that sense as well & seems to "awaken" into one of his dreams just as I begin to nod off.  It's not always easy to get him back into bed or sometimes I just play along and try to ask what he's actually seeing as he's sleepwalking...he won't remember it in the morning anyways!  By the time I've done that, I'm either mad I'm not getting sleep or I'm laughing about it & trying to remember it so I can tease him about it later.

Usually, I'd just take a Tylenol PM & let it zap me down, but that's a luxury I can't indulge on when I'm nursing a baby.  So I guess that I'll either have to get used to it or do some sensory deprivation to block out everyone else when they sense I'm trying to recharge.

I'll have to chalk that up to virtuous training because I pretty sure I know which way that one's going to go!
